What Actually Differs
OEM parts come from the vehicle maker’s approved tooling; aftermarket parts come from independent moulds reverse-engineered from the original. The functional questions are mould accuracy (gap and flush on the mounting points), material grade (PP / PE / ABS as the original) and finish. A well-made aftermarket bracket is functionally identical; a badly-made one fails at the clips.
For lamps, regulation matters: markets under UN ECE rules require the E-mark. SLCHN lists E-mark availability item by item — for example Qashqai tail lamps SL262010005 and SL262014005 carry the mark.
Where Aftermarket Wins
Collision parts on 5–20 year old vehicles are the classic case: the car is worth a fraction of new, insurers and owners price-shop, and dealers hold little stock for older generations. Wheel brows, brackets, fender liners, engine protection covers and insulator hoods are low-risk, high-turn items where aftermarket is the default choice in most markets.
The economics compound at wholesale: factory-direct aftermarket pricing typically lands at 20–40% of dealer retail for plastic trims, which is the margin that funds a distributor’s whole operation.
How to Judge an Aftermarket Factory
Ask three things: Do they publish OEM cross references for every SKU (transparency)? Do they fit-check batches on vehicle jigs (process)? Can they show consistent export history to demanding markets (track record)? A factory that answers all three in writing is safe to trial with one mixed container.
